Collegial Organizations: Information Sources
Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors is one of the leading national training and technical assistance providers for families with very young children (birth through 5). Known first and foremost for their work with Spanish speaking families, APOD has reviewed and translated Perfectly Punctual materials for families for the past several years. Louise Wiener has become a Senior Advisor to APOD with a focus on enhancing bilingual STEM and literacy readiness materials for families with infants and toddlers as well as preschoolers.
Attendance Works is the leading national resource for research, policy and practice related to chronic absence. Hedy Chang, Executive Director, was an important influence in the development of the Perfectly Punctual Campaign and continues to be an important source of information and guidance. Louise Wiener, founder of LearnLead, has become a Senior Fellow with Attendance Works. As of July 31, 2015, all PPC materials and special services will be available through Attendance Works.
Baltimore Education Research Consortium is a partnership of Johns Hopkins University, Morgan State University and Baltimore City Public Schools to develop research to influence practice within the Baltimore City School System. The studyEarly Elementary Performance and Attendance in Baltimore City Schools’ Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten., by Faith Connolly, Executive Director of BERC and Linda S. Olson is an important contribution to early childhood education and attendance. Dr Connolly as well as Dr. Tracy Rone of Morgan State University each served as a member of the Perfectly Punctual Advisory Board in Baltimore City. BERC continues to generate important research on attendance in the early years.
The Baltimore Student Attendance Collaborative, which was recently integrated in the Baltimore Family League, brings together non-profit organizations in Baltimore City whose work impacts attendance. The group meets monthly to exchange information,advocate collectively, and develop joint approaches and/or demonstrations that generate momentum toward policy and practice change across public and private agencies in Baltimore City. Sue Fothergill, the initial executive director, now a Senior Associate at Attendance Works, was on the Perfectly Punctual Advisory Board in Baltimore City and is an important colleague in attendance work.
Campaign for Grade Level Reading is a national initiative created through the leadership of the Annie E. Casey Foundation and now supported by multiple foundations to improve the number of children in America reading on grade level by grade three. The Campaign focuses on three contributing factors to reading success: improving school readiness, abating chronic absence and promoting summer learning programs. The Perfectly Punctual Campaign is the attendance component of the Delray Beach, Florida Reading on Grade Level initiative.
Graduate School of Education and Human Development, George Washington University, provides master’s and doctoral level programs, is home to the Center for Education Policy and is an active participant in public policy and procedures to benefit education in the District of Columbia and beyond. GSEHD co-hosted a Roundtable on Chronic Absence and the Early Grade with Learning and Leadership in Families, in March of 2013.
National Head Start Association is a national membership organization which provides important information on early childhood research and practice and provides training and technical assistance and advocates for Head Start. LearnLead began as a project of the National Head Start Assoication, created Museum as a Resource under NHSA’s auspices, tested Messages of the Built Environment with member organzations and has worked closely with NHSA throughout the years.
